Hourtin is located just south of the Gironde estuary bordering on the Atlantic. The area is part of the Médoc Regional Nature Park. It is famous for its vast dunes and wide shell limestone beaches that shimmer silver in the sun. With its neighbouring town Carcans, Hourtin shares one of France’s largest natural sweet-water lakes, the ‘Lac d’Hourtin et de Carcans’. The flat maritime surroundings are perfectly suited for hiking in the nature reserve, bike tours, long days at the beach and every type of water sport e.g. sailing and wind-, wake- and kite-surfing or stand-up paddling. As well as of course angling. On the spot you’ll find a post-office, shops, doctors and good restaurants offering you typical local cuisine. There’s a weekly market which even opens its stands 3 times a week during the summer months.
Endless, wide beaches with impressive tides and dunes, large port towns and famous lighthouses enchant visitors to Nouvelle-Aquitaine and bring smiles to their faces like the rolling, unspoilt countryside or the famous cuisine and wine-growing culture in the vast wine region between Poitiers and La Rochelle, Limoges and Périgueux, Bordeaux and, down in the south, Biarritz in Biscaya. No matter whether it’s as a couple or a family, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a first-class destination for unforgettable discoveries of the typical French lifestyle.
